Child expenses between co-parents, split clearly
School, sports, doctor, clothes: in FamSync every child expense has its receipt, who paid it and each parent's share. The balance updates by itself and you both see it, each on your own phone.
Who pays for what when splitting child expenses?
Your parenting agreement, separation decree, or court order determines who pays for what. Routine daily costs are typically covered by child support, while extraordinary expenses are shared by an agreed percentage, often 50/50. FamSync does not make legal decisions or provide legal advice: it records each expense with your chosen split and automatically maintains the balance between both parents.
How does expense splitting work in FamSync?
Each expense has an amount, who paid it, how it's split between the parents and, if you like, a photo of the receipt. The app adds everything up and shows the balance: who owes whom, and how much. When one of you pays the other back, even in part, you record the payment and the balance updates for both.
- Snap the receipt: the amount and date fill in by themselves.
- Choose who paid and the split: even, 50/50, or custom with your own percentages.
- Your co-parent sees the expense on their phone, with the receipt attached.
- The balance shows who owes what; payments back, even partial ones, are recorded in the app.

Which child expenses can you track?
Any you share: school fees and books, lunches, sports, doctor and dentist, medicine, clothes, trips and birthdays. Each expense has a free description and a photo of the receipt. Which costs count as shared extras is up to your agreement, not the app.
Can you export co-parenting expenses?
Yes. Expenses export to Excel or CSV, with date, description, amount, who paid and each share, and they go into the PDF report for the period you choose, together with the calendar and messages. It's useful to keep, or to show your lawyer or family mediator.
Frequently asked questions
Does FamSync calculate child support?
No. FamSync doesn't calculate child support and gives no legal or tax advice: it keeps track of the expenses you enter and the balance between you.
Is the expense tracker free for both parents?
Yes. Expenses, the balance and exports are free for both parents. The only paid option removes ads, and it's optional.
Can my co-parent see the receipts?
Yes. Every receipt photo you attach is visible to the other parent, next to the expense.
Who pays for summer camp, school meals, and babysitters?
Most parenting agreements or court orders distinguish between routine daily expenses covered by child support and extra costs like summer camp or childcare. Extra or variable expenses are typically shared by an agreed percentage, such as 50/50. FamSync tracks who paid and calculates the reimbursement balance automatically.
What counts as an extraordinary child expense?
Common shared extra expenses include uninsured medical and dental care, prescription glasses, sports fees, school trips, and agreed tutoring. Your custody agreement specifies which items require mutual consent before purchasing; FamSync records the receipt and updates each parent's share.
